In my years as a school principal—and having served under six others—I’ve seen first-hand what makes the difference between a good leader and a great one. Using the word PRINCIPALS, here are ten qualities every exceptional school leader is encouraged to bring to their role:

P – Persevere – Stay committed and resilient when challenges arise.
R – Responsible – Take ownership of decisions and outcomes.
I – Integrity – Lead with honesty, fairness, humility, and strong ethics.
N – Nurturing – Support the growth and well-being of every student and staff member.
C – Collaborative – Invite input, share ownership, and value every voice.
I – Inspirational – Spark enthusiasm, creative and innovative thinking, and belief in a shared vision.
P – Patient – Give people and change the time they need to develop and flourish.
A – Approachable – Be visible, listen well, and remain open to others.
L – Loyal – Stand by your people, your values, and your mission.
S – Service – Lead by selflessly serving others, putting their needs before your own.

Great principals don’t just run schools—they shape futures. Leadership is about more than a title; it’s about daily choices that build trust, inspire growth, and create a legacy of learning.
