What if we changed the narrative about our country?
After almost 50 years in education, mentoring young people, and developing communities, I believe New Zealand’s greatest untapped resource is within our people—not beneath our land or surrounding our shores.
Too often our national conversation falls back on familiar doubts:
- “We’re too small.”
- “We’re too remote.”
- “We can’t compete with the rest of the world.”
- “That’s just the way New Zealand is.”
When repeated enough, these comments stop being simple observations and start becoming deep-seated beliefs.
What if we flipped the question? Instead of asking “Why can’t New Zealand?”, what if we started asking: “Together, what could New Zealand, Aotearoa become?”
We Have Strong Foundations to Build On
This isn’t a vision for a broken country. New Zealand already holds world-class potential:
- Rule of Law: Ranked 5th out of 143 countries by the World Justice Project in 2025.
- Wellbeing: Strong Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) performance in health, environmental quality, civic engagement, and life satisfaction.
- Agility: Our size gives us a rare global advantage: we are small enough to change quickly.
10 Pillars for a Nation of Potential
To move from managing problems to creating conditions where people flourish, I have outlined 10 core pillars:
- Every Life Matters: See the possibility in every person and ask what potential hasn’t been discovered yet.
- Belonging Helps Potential Grow: The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 showed only 68% of NZ students felt they belonged at school (vs 75% OECD average). 22% reported feeling like an outsider (vs 17% across the OECD). When people know they matter, they believe what they do matters.
- Every Parent Can Help a Child Flourish: Provide accessible, evidence-based guidance to every family without judgment.
- Teachers Can See What Others Miss: Support educators to spot capability, creativity, and resilience where others see difficulty.
- Young People Can Change New Zealand Now: Shift from telling youth they are “the future” to offering real responsibility today.
- Māori Potential Can Shape Our Future: Invest in capability and agency so Māori leadership, enterprise, and culture enrich the whole nation.
- Let’s Grow Taller—Together: Turn Tall Poppy syndrome into a Tall Forest—celebrate success and use it to lift others.
- Think Big—Even If We’re Small: Use our size to test ideas faster and become a global demonstration nation.
- Let’s Make It Easier to Do Good Things: Shift government focus from “How much did we spend?” to “What did that investment make possible?”
- Leave Something Wonderful Behind: Ensure the next generation inherits greater opportunity, stronger institutions, and genuine hope.

The Flourishing Cycle
These ten pillars form a continuous feedback loop:
SEE POTENTIAL → CREATE BELONGING → BUILD CAPABILITY → ENABLE CONTRIBUTION → STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY → CREATE FLOURISHING
When individuals experience belonging, confidence grows. Confidence drives contribution, contribution builds resilient communities, and strong communities create a flourishing nation.

The Best Is Still Ahead
We don’t need a new national identity—just a renewed confidence in our possibility. Nations aren’t changed overnight by massive mandates; they change through millions of small actions done differently every day—a parent encouraging a child, a teacher believing in a struggling student, a business opening a door, or a community choosing connection.
I believe the best is still ahead. What could we do together?
Free Resource: I have created visual infographics summarizing the 10 Pillars and The Flourishing Cycle. They are available as a free download (no names, email addresses kept) through Mentoring Matters for anyone who wants to start these conversations in their workplace, school, or community.
